It's a Seedy Business 12 months of the Year!

Renee's

In our climate, gardening can be a year-round business. There are always vegetables that can be started by seed to extend your harvests or even to start a new garden. The recent newsletter from Renee's Garden Seed suggests planting green beans, summer squash, beets, carrots and chard. Those seeds will hit the ground running in June and July's warm soil. Lettuces can be planted in a filtered sun location for quick harvesting. Fresh crops of basils can be planted by seed for early fall harvest, perfect for putting up pesto. You can read the article in its entirety at www.reneesgarden.com/articles/plant_in_june.html

Be sure to come see our extensive seed selection including Renee's Garden Seed. We also offer seedlings throughout the summer to keep your vegetable garden growing strong. Let our Nursery Pros help you succeed in growing your own healthy harvests.

Pick A Picante Pepper - Your Chances Are 1 in 10!

Peppers

For a fun game of pepper roulette, try Pimento de Padron. Eaten while green, 9 out of 10 of these favorites of the Tapas (Spanish appetizer dishes) bars are generally spicy without being incendiary. Then there's that 1 out of 10 that ignites - ay caramba! When eaten red, watch out! It's best to have milk, ice cream or anything with a high oil content handy to ease the heat. Of course, after a while it hurts so good. Padrons are heirloom peppers from Spain about the size of a habaņero. Generally they are served in Tapas bars fried in olive oil and salted. Yamagami's Nursery is pleased to offer them for sale. Hurry in while we still have them! Look to Yamagami's for the best selection around of incredible edibles.

Suncrest Peach

Suncrest Peach

Suncrest Peach, the peach that inspired a book. That lovely book, Epitaph for a Peach, by David Masamoto, describes the ecstasy of biting into a perfect tree-ripened Suncrest Peach, sweet and oh so juicy. Sadly, many of us have grown up eating peaches from the supermarket, which means varieties that can be picked green and shipped easily. Even Farmer's Market peaches are either not fully ripe or are bruised. Known for its incredible juiciness and "melting quality", Suncrest was only available to those who drove to California's Central Valley fruit stands. Now you can grow your own and taste for yourself why all the fuss. Yamagami's Nursery is always looking for fruit treasures for your garden of good eatin' and Suncrest Peach is a true treasure.

In Store Special: Thursday, July 1st through Saturday, July 3rd ALL Suncrest Peaches in stock are 50% OFF!

Growing Table (Seedless) Grapes

Thomcord Grape

Ah, the joy of plucking grapes warmed by the sun and hand-feeding your beloved, or better yet, yourself! You don't have to have acreage to grow grapes. A single vine will provide a delicious harvest and a green wall. A grape arbor makes a leafy green summer hideaway with snacks included! Grapes love the heat and will really take off if planted now. Yamagami's currently has green, red and purple varieties of seedless grapes including Thomcord, a hybrid of Thompson Seedless (also in stock) and Concord (also in stock). Another new purple grape is the Blueberry Grape with a distinctive berryish tang. We also offer rusty iron arbors in different sizes for your own garden hideaway!

In Store Special: Thursday, July 1st through Saturday, July 3rd ALL grapes in stock are 50% OFF!

Cures for the Summertime Blues (for roses at least)

All our rain has paid off in high times for fungal and bacterial infections. You may have noticed that your roses look off. If you are not sure what you are seeing, bring large samples in plastic bags to the Info Center for diagnosis by our Nursery Pros. The first line of defense is to remove the damaged foliage and pick up dead or diseased leaves from the ground. When removing damaged foliage, prune the rose to allow greater air circulation through the plant. Here are some images of the three most seen rose disease problems and suggested treatments (organic, OMRI approved).

Powdery mildew

Powdery Mildew: Appears as a whitish powder coating often yellowed foliage. It can spread rapidly, so taking control early is key. After removing the damaged foliage, spray regularly with OMRI approved Serenade to control the disease. Although it is counter-intuitive, spraying the plant with water through a bug blaster will wash the mildew off and keep it from gaining a foothold.

Black Spot

Black Spot: Appears as dead spots or patches (often surrounded by yellow) on leaves. Many diseased leaves will fall, so the plant will need regular clean-ups. Concern Copper Soap Fungicide is ready to use and easy to keep on hand for when needed. Serenade Disease Control is also an effective natural treatment.

Rust

Rust: From the top of the leaf it looks like black spot but when you look under the leaf you'll see the orangey spots that give this disease its name. Even gently removing the diseased leaves will spread the spores, so this disease takes awhile to get under control. Copper Soap is a very effective treatment for rust.

Since environmental problems (like overwater) and insect damage can look similar, it's a good idea to bring in samples before starting treatment. Do note that one of the many reasons to use organic fertilizers is that their use results in sturdier cell walls on what amounts to the skin of a leaf. This thicker skin makes it more difficult for diseases (or insects) to attack foliage. Come to Yamagami's Nursery to consult with our Nursery Pros for all your garden needs. We are here to help you succeed...the first time.
