2007 Fruit and Tree Catalog

Time to start planning backyard your orchard. Our 2007 Fruit Tree Catalog is hot off the presses and now available. It features dozens of our favorite varieties especially selected for this area. Trees ordered from this catalog will arrive in January already root pruned and planted in biodegradable paper pots. They can stay in those pots until both you and your soil are ready to plant. Since they usually manage to arrive in a rainstorm, this makes a big difference!

Some exciting new offerings are three varieties of European pears. All three are resistant to fireblight, a bacterial infection which has plagued pears in this area. Blake's Pride Pear is medium sized, an attractive yellow and very aromatic. Harrow Delight Pear is similar to a Bartlett ,yellow with a red blush. Its flesh is smooth, fine and very flavorful. Potomac Pear is sweet and buttery, similar to D'Anjou. So if you've given up on growing pears because of past fireblight problems, here are some great new choices.

Other new additions to our catalog are some exciting Pomegranate varieties. Look for Garnet Sash, a tasty dwarf form also known as Elf. Red Silk with firm but edible seeds has an amazing sweet berry flavor. Sharp Velvet is for those of us who prize a sweet/tart flavor burst. It bears huge crops of dark red fruit with a powerhouse of flavor.

These and many other taste treats can be found in our 2007 Fruit Tree Catalog. Click below to download the entire catalog. We are not yet set up to process orders online but we can take phone orders. Call us at (408) 252-3347 with a credit card to place your order and receive a 20% discount too! Let us help you succeed in growing your own backyard orchard.

Meet Our Pro - Jackie

article picture

Jackie Doda started working part-time at Yamagami's nursery shortly after retiring from working as a molecular biologist at Stanford. She decided to expand her gardening hobby by working here and learning even more about plants and gardening. She has long been active in the California Native Plant Society as a propagator for their nursery, the Western Horticultural Society where she serves on the Board of Directors, and as a docent for the Edgewood Preserve. Jackie also studied Horticulture at Foothill College to improve her own gardening skills at home. Here at Yamagami’s she is learning more about non-native plants but California natives will always be her first love and comprise her plant palette of choice.

When not working, Jackie loves to garden, hike and travel. Her travels have taken her to Central and South America. Her next big trip is to New Zealand. When traveling, she prefers to explore an area’s natural history and to avoid cities. Jackie lives and gardens in Mountain View where she has learned to understand, appreciate and work with her heavy adobe soil. As you might guess, her garden consists mainly of California native plants.

Jackie works as a salesperson and answers the phone here. She is always seeking to expand her knowledge and takes great pleasure in sharing that knowledge with customers. Her advice to customers is that gardening should be fun, not stressful. Try plants that will grow in our soil and climate and investigate California natives for plant satisfaction. If you are interested in native plants, be sure to talk with Jackie!

What You'll Need:

  • 2 cups fresh strawberries, hulled
  • 2 packages (3-oz) strawberry gelatin
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream

Step by Step:

Crush strawberries; drain and reserve juice. Set berries aside.

Add enough water to reserved juice to measure 1-1/2 cups; pour into a saucepan. Bring to a boil.

In a small bowl, combine gelatin and sugar; add boiling juice mixture and stir until gelatin is dissolved.

Cool completely. Stir in crushed strawberries.

In a small mixing bowl, beat cream until soft peaks form; fold into berry mixture.

Return all to the mixing bowl. Cover and refrigerate for several hours or overnight.

Before serving, beat until fluffy.
