"Water-Conserving Plants and Landscapes for the Bay Area":
Your Own Landscape Consultant
| Trying to decide what to plant and not sure where to start? Consult "Water-Conserving Plants and Landscapes for the Bay Area" for ideas. It is the most useful book for plant selection that we offer. Published by the East Bay Municipal Utility District, it recommends sturdy plants that are compatible with each other and our area. Best of all, it features color photographs of mature plants in the landscape, along with recommendations for where to plant them. Divided into sections for trees, shrubs, groundcovers and perennials; it is in a homeowner-friendly format. Use it to help you fill in the blanks in your garden. This book is now out of print. We have brought in the last of them because adding this book to your library is like hiring a landscape consultant!

Take a Walk on the Wilder Side of Tulips, Plant a Flock of Parrots!
| It's time to select from the dozens of colors and types of Tulips now found at Yamagami's Nursery. Most people think only of stately single Darwin tulips without realizing that there are many interesting forms. Some varieties look like other flowers entirely.
Consider planting a flock of Parrot Tulips. They are multi-colored with ruffled petals, resembling parrot wings, especially when fully open. Lily Tulips have pointed petals, and when fully open, resemble lilies in colors you’ve never seen before. Double Tulips resemble long stemmed peonies in luscious colors.
We recommend buying tulip bulbs now while selection is at its peak, then storing them in paper bags in your vegetable crisper for 6 to 8 weeks, thus simulating the winter chill they love. They will reward you for your efforts with spectacular, long-stemmed blossoms in spring. Whether you prefer the traditional Darwins or choose to walk on the wilder side of tulips, Yamagami's Nursery offers dozens of choices. Come see for yourself! |
A Unique Visitor to Yamagami's Along with Some Old Friends, the Master Gardeners of Santa Clara County
| On Saturday, September 22 from 10 AM to noon and Sunday, September 23 from 11 AM to 1 PM the Master Gardeners of Santa Clara County will be at Yamagami’s to help customers solve their garden problems using Integrated Pest Management practices. They will also be demonstrating their new Touch Screen Management Kiosk. It contains data on 50 common garden pests and the safest, yet effective ways to control them. It even prints out the information for you to take home. The kiosk also offers good gardening practices advice on such subjects as watering and fertilizing. Kiosks will be placed throughout California as part of UC Master Gardener outreach in nurseries, libraries, county fairs, garden exhibits, and plant clinics. It will be at Yamagami’s until October 15. |
The Master Gardeners have had extensive training through the UC Co-op Extension. They invite you to bring in bagged samples of your garden pests for them to identify so they can recommend IPM solutions whenever possible. If they are stumped, they will send your samples to UC Davis for diagnosis. The demonstration and diagnosis are FREE, as public service is part of the Master Gardener program. Come meet them and learn more about this great program.
