Quotation of the Week:
"Nature, at whose feet everyone who does any gardening must sit and learn, settled the question ages and ages before mankind began to cultivate flowers, by creating the annual as the great filler-in of the vegetable world--the finishing touch to her handiwork."
~Benjamin Goodrich |

Your Perfect Fresh Cut Tree
|
|
When only a perfect fresh cut Christmas tree will make your holiday celebration complete, come to Yamagami's Nursery. On Friday, November 23, our cut tree lot opens, filled with high mountain grown Noble Firs. These dense fragrant trees have been grown in Oregon with lots of rain, so they are heavy and moisture laden. They are all displayed in water here so they will stay fresh and lush through the holiday season.
When you purchase a tree at Yamagami's, we will make a fresh cut on the trunk so that it will continue to drink up at your home. Not only are they more beautiful when moisture laden but they are safer too. We sell a ready-to-use fire retardant spray for extra safety plus protection for allergy sufferers. Every cut tree comes with a free disposal bag to make it easier to get it outside. We provide recycling information too.
For many reasons, including safety, we offer Gunnard Tree Stands with a 2 gallon water reservoir to keep your tree from drying out. Once you own a Gunnard we will install it on your tree every year at no charge. Bring it in to us at the end of the season and we will even store your stand until you need it the following year. No more losing it in the garage somewhere! Gunnard stands are designed to fit heavy trees like Noble Firs (and their large irregularly shaped trunks) without having to "shave" them down. The #20 model will hold an 18 foot tall tree straight and securely. Come in to see our selection.
Yamagami's Nursery offers outstanding selection and service. With just a phone call you can have a beautiful Noble Fir delivered and placed upright in your home to your satisfaction. We can also pick up your tree at the end of the season and dispose of it. Visit our enchanted forest this holiday season to find your perfect fresh cut tree. |
Nick's Planting Suggestion:
California Mums
|
We've just received our first small shipment of "California" Mums, a collection of named varieties usually only seen at florists or in collector's gardens. Football mums, Spider mums and other exotic forms in beautiful colors are included in the collection. We intend to start offering them regularly starting next spring, so this is just our first taste. If you have always wanted to grow the enormous blossoms seen in so much Japanese and Chinese art, these are the mums for you. |
| Disbudding is important for largest "exhibition" size blooms in all these varieties. That simply means removing all but one flower bud per stem. Yosemite Falls blooms feature a central large ball-shaped flower with trailing florets all in pinks and lavenders. Half Moon Bay is a spider mum in a dusky bronze with pink and orange hues. Sutter’s Mill is a large pale golden "incurve" or football mum. Mt. Whitney is a large white snowball blossom. Rodeo Drive buds begin to open like those of a common cushion mum but keep going until they end up a mound of ruby in the center surrounded by a petalled skirt.
Chrysanthemums have been treasured for thousands of years as "The Flower of Happiness." Add some traditional happiness to your garden with California Mums. These beauties are in short supply so hurry on down for yours. If you should miss out on this batch, you can find them here again next spring. Come to Yamagami's Nursery for the best of the old and new garden plants!

It's getting to be Turkey Time which also means turkey soup time and all the wonderful smells and tastes of the season. There's nothing like fresh herbs to give those soups a little extra zip. Many Herbs will thrive right through the winter including the traditional parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme. Other choices for winter flavor include cilantro (for turkey tortilla soup), winter savory (excellent in dressings), sorrel (for soups) and tarragon (tasty). Plant in full sun in the ground or in pots. It's a good idea to plant them near the kitchen to make it easier to harvest them even in inclement weather. Visit our herb section and pick up some winter vegetables while you are here. Bring herbs home for the holidays. |

Gardeners in the Santa Clara Valley are lucky--our climate is perfect for a particularly fragrant flower, the freesia. When planted in the garden, freesias can start blooming as early as February. If not over-watered freesias will even naturalize here! They can be planted all the way through November and into December for spring bloom and again in the spring for a summer bloom. Plant them in a sunny spot on the south or east side of your landscape.
Freesia flowers resemble orchids in plant structure--their foliage is strappy, about a foot high, with flower stalks that grow upward then arch over, topping out at about 18". They bloom in a rainbow of colors and can be single or double flowers. Freesias do best when kept moist--but not soggy--throughout the spring; but keep them on the dry side in summer.
Freesias also thrive in container plantings. Tuck the corms into existing containers or mix some into new plantings. They can even be "forced" for indoor blooms. Treat yourself to some fragrant freesias and enjoy years of repeat performances. This is the perfect time to plant freesias and many other spring blooming bulbs. Come into Yamagami's Nursery for a great selection of bulbs and the products and information you need to succeed...the first time!
