Blueberries for Beauty, and Health! |
|
Beautiful in the spring garden with fragrant white or pink flowers, in the summer garden covered with yummy berries and in the fall garden with rich autumn colored foliage, blueberries have a lot to add to nearly every garden. Blueberries are also delicious and nutritious. They do have a few special needs, primarily adjusting the pH of your soil and proper pruning. Basically though, they are easy to grow. They are tolerant of full sun to part shade and even produce well in containers. Several years ago the Santa Clara Valley Master Gardeners, under the direction of Nancy Garrison, planted a test garden of blueberries on Winchester Blvd. in San Jose and gained some valuable experience evaluating blueberry varieties. The one thing that we all learned was that blueberries THRIVE here and produce bountiful crops. Yamagami’s Nursery is contributing to another test garden starting up this year to evaluate new and different varieties. Currently Yamagami’s Nursery offers 12 different varieties of blueberries including Northern Highbush, Southern Highbush and even a rabbiteye type. Come in to pick up our FREE Blueberry Guide with variety descriptions with planting and care information. We can help you succeed in growing your own blueberry pies!
