Watering for a Healthy Garden and Wallet
As we move into summer, water becomes a serious issue for gardens and gardeners. Voluntary water cutbacks seem likely for Santa Clara Valley, and mandatory restrictions are already in effect for East Bay MUD customers. Instead of just letting your garden wilt and wither, it’s time to water smart and make every drop count!
THE SINGLE BEST THING YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR GARDEN IS TO MULCH EVERYTHING!

Not only will a 2" to 3" layer of mulch help conserve water but it also keeps weeds from sprouting and stealing water from your desirable plants. It also keeps roots cooler. Roots near an unmulched soil surface heat up and then do not pump water efficiently, no matter how much water they get.
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO REALIZE IS THAT ROOTS GROW TO FIND WATER.
This means that if you practice frequent shallow watering, you'll end up with plants with shallow roots and no stamina. Deep watering will help plants form a deep vigorous roots system that can help sustain the plant during stressful conditions.
WATER PLANTS ONLY WHEN THEY NEED IT.
This seems self-evident but with increasing dependence on automatic sprinkler systems, it is not what is happening in most gardens. It is better to turn your system on only when needed and adjust the times by the season. Avoid putting different kinds of plants on the same station. Trees and woody shrubs do not need or want to be watered the same way as your lawn.
HOW YAMAGAMI’S CAN HELP:
We offer a FREE Lawn Watering Guide initially put together by the Santa Clara Valley Water District and then amended by us. (The reverse side has a guide for diagnosing lawn problems.) We also offer additional FREE literature from the Santa Clara Valley Water District on low water use gardening. Additionally, we offer an excellent, out of print book from East Bay MUD entitled, "Water Conserving Plants & Landscapes for the Bay Area". Ron, Yamagami's General Manager, recommends it highly because it is easy to use. It features color pictures of mature plants in landscapes and groups them by usage. It sells for just $19.99--since it is out of print, there is a limited supply.
We offer several good mulches including The Original Mulch Block. For those of you who can't or would rather not handle large, heavy, dirty bags, Mulch Blocks are the perfect solution! A clean 9 lb block becomes 2 cubic feet of excellent mulch. Made of coir (coconut husk fiber) they are a renewable resource that also lasts longer than bark products.
