With well over 100 people sampling tomatoes in a 2 hour period, our tasting was a big success! Out of the 31 varieties we sampled, two sweet cherry types were, once again, the big crowd pleasers. 'Isis Candy' and 'Sweet Baby Girl,' both red cherry types, came in first and second. Kids love them! We offered both of these varieties last year and will continue to do so.
The next few favorites were 'Hillbilly' (a striped beefsteak heirloom), 'Neves Azorean Red' (a red beefsteak) and 'Cherokee Chocolate' (a "black" beefsteak). 'Hillbilly' has long been a staff favorite. 'Cherokee Chocolate' we offered this year because it scored so highly in our 2008 tomato tasting.
'Neves Azorean Red,' however, is new to us. We will plan to offer it as a plant next year. It was developed by Anthony Neves with seed from the Azores, hence its name. It offers good yields of tasty fruit weighing 1 to 3 lbs. Be sure to try one in your garden next year!
We also offered 10 peppers to taste ranging from 'Gypsy,' a sweet pepper, to 'Fatali,' a nuclear blast. Only a few were brave (foolish?) enough to try 'Fatali,' and they rated it highly. Most popular were 'New Mex' and 'Villancho,' both in the medium range. We will offer all three again next year.
All in all it was a fun time for everyone!

A Happy Customer's Tomato Forest
|
|
We were thrilled to get this e-mail from another happy customer. You can tell by the pictures that despite our wacky summer weather, with the right advice and products success can be yours, too! Lorena Gorsche is Yamagami’s staff member who gave the good advice.
Subject: My Tomato Forest
Hi Lorena
Thanks you for all your great tips to make this year Tomato harvest bountiful. As I told you I had to grow good tomatoes this year because they are Faye's favorite food. This has been the best crop in the over 25 years I have been growing tomatoes. These are not tomato plants, they are over 6 foot tomato trees.
Thank you!!!!!
Dave and Faye Jackson

Pumpkinmania Update: Growing Season Coming to an End
|
|
Godfather Al is happy to report that Sir Galahad has continued to grow a little in length, if not in width. He is attaining a richer orange color every day so we know his growing season is coming to an end.
We’re all looking forward to the Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off on October 10th. Author and radio personality Bob Tanem will be our official judge once again. There will be a prize for every pumpkin entry that weighs in heavier than our own Sir Galahad. It’s a great show for the whole family!
Go to our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/pages/Cupertino-CA/Yamagamis-Nursery-Garden-Center/63172657808 for more frequent updates and photos.
Send us reports of your own pumpkin growing experiences and photos to InfoCenter@YamagamisNursery.com to share with our readers. |

Editor’s note: This article is from the Santa Clara Valley Water District’s latest mailing. We are reprinting it here to provide this information to all of our customers. We encourage you to attend our Fall Garden Fair to speak with Rosalie Sears of the SCVWD about programs and rebates available to homeowners.
End of Summer Water Update!
As summer draws to a close, some of you may be thinking that your time to conserve is over. While summer is typically our peak water usage period, which makes conserving water critical, in order to reach our long term conservation goals we need to reduce our water use year round.
For the last six months the Santa Clara Valley Water District has been asking that we all cut back our water use by 15 percent. And while our conservation numbers have been improving, to date we’ve only reached a 9 percent reduction in water use. With three years of drought behind us and uncertain water supply conditions in our future, that’s just not enough.
There are many ways to conserve water year round, but one of the best ways to jump start water conservation is with a free Water-Wise House Call for your home.
During a Water-Wise House Call, the technician:
- checks your toilet for leaks and replaces toilet flapper valves if needed;
- measures your showerhead flow rates and installs free showerheads if needed;
- measures faucet flow rates and provides aerators for kitchens and bathrooms.
The survey’s focus then shifts to outdoor water use and the technician then:
- evaluates the efficiency of your irrigation system;
- provides you with a personalized irrigation schedule;
- identifies overspray, broken or mismatched sprinkler heads, high water pressure and other problems;
- provides water conservation rebate program materials and water-wise landscaping tips from the pros.
Residents of single-family homes, condos, townhouses, apartments, and mobile homes are invited to participate. The water district also offers a free Water Survey Program for businesses and schools.
When you’re thinking about how to conserve water, it’s important to remember that more than 50% of indoor household water consumption occurs in the bathroom. It’s also extremely important to find out if there are any leaks in your outdoor water usage, since more than half of the water used in an average home goes to its landscape.
For a better world, follow these water saving tips:
- Shorten your showers by just 5 minutes and save 15 gallons every time.
- Install faucet aerators and low-flow showerheads and save 16 gallons a day.
- Wait for full loads to wash clothes and dishes and save 20 gallons per load.
- Install high-efficiency toilets and save 25 gallons a day.
- Turn off the faucet while shaving or brushing your teeth and save 2 gallons per minute.
- Fix leaks and save more than 15 gallons per day, per leak.
- Water your lawn before 5 AM instead of midday and save 20 gallons every time.
- Landscape with water-wise plants and save 20 gallons a day.
- Clean sidewalks with a broom, not a hose and save 15 gallons every time.
- Apply a layer of mulch around plants to reduce moisture loss and save 20 gallons a day.
- Install drip irrigation for trees, shrubs and plants to save 20 gallons a day.
- Check the efficiency of your irrigation system. Fixing broken sprinkler heads and drip emitters saves 25 gallons a day
Residents who would like to sign up for a Water Wise House Call can call (800) 548-1882. San Jose Water Company customers should call (408) 279-7900 to schedule an appointment. To sign up for our Water Use Survey, businesses or schools can call (866) 685-2322. To learn more about our conservation programs and rebates, visit www.save20gallons.org. Remember, if we each save 20 gallons a day, together we can make a difference!
