Send us your garden questions via the contact us button.
Q: I planted Cyclamen last week and they are all starting to wilt and die, what happened?
A: It is important to leave the top of the bulb exposed above the soil surface when planting Cyclamen. If you bury the bulb, the plant will rot.
Q: What kind of vegetables can I grow plant in fall to grow in winter?
A: Root crops and leaf crops can be planted to overwinter. Onion sets can be planted as well as seed potatoes.
Q: My peaches had serious peach leaf curl. What can I do to prevent it next spring?
A: Your first dormant spray should be at leaf drop around Thanksgiving; your last spray should be as buds begin to crac in late winter/early spring. Use a copper spray.
Q: Are there any flowers I can put in my planter boxes that can stand the winter cold?
A: Yes, there are lots of choices. Pansies, Violas and Iceland Poppies sail right through the cold in sunny locations. Cyclamen and Primroses will replace Impatiens and Begonias in the shade.
Q: Can I just trim all the browned leaves from frost damage off plants or cut them to the ground?
A: No. It is important to leave whatever brown tissue there is on the plant to serve as insulation for whatever part of the plant is still alive. Do not trim frost damage off until there is no more chance of frost, Mid-March is generally safe.
Q: I had a lot of crabgrass in my lawn, what can I do about it?
A: Apply Scott’s Crabgrass Preventer Plus Lawn Fertilizer in January to keep seeds from last summer’s crabgrass from sprouting. Apply it again in 60 days to keep spurge, which germinates later, from sprouting.
Q: I want to plant vegetable seeds directly into the ground but worry that the cold nights will keep them from sprouting or stunt the ones that do sprout. What can I do?
A: Apply Easy Gardener Plant and Seed Blanket over the top of your row of seeds or seedlings. It will keep the soil warmer and encourage faster sprouting and growth.
Q: I have several Citrus trees in half barrels. How can I protect them from frost?
A: Drape Frost Protek bags over the plants securely. They can touch the trees and can even be left on during the day for as long as a few weeks.
